Inside Gaia-X #8: Inside EuProGigant

Since March 2021, experts from science and business have been cooperating on the development of a European, digitally networked production ecosystem in the context of Gaia-X in the Austrian-German lighthouse project “EuProGigant”.The aim of the project is to enable the smart and sovereign use of data in industry.Participating Austrian partners included: Plasser & Theurer, WFL Millturn Technologies and the Vienna University of Technology.

Thomas Trautner (Vienna University of Technology) has been familiar with Gaia-X for some time due to his work in the research group for control technology and integrated systems of the Institute for Manufacturing Engineering.

EuProGigant, its practical applications and the connection to Gaia-X are the focus of the Inside Gaia-X #8. The virtual event starts with an input from Mr. Trautner, followed by an open discussion on the topic and the opportunity to ask questions. In his lecture, Mr.

Trautner will address the following topics:

Presentation of EuProGigant:

  • Objective, current status quo in the project, outlook
  • Industrial research and experimental development work

Application examples from the project:

  • Ideal component matching via data exchange: Use case from machine tool construction, avoidance of wasting resources
  • Cross-company digital twins: setting up shared test benches with networked processing machines
  • Mobile data processing in the field of maintenance: Use case from track construction, processing large amounts of data with cloud/edge computing
  • CO2 footprint calculation in product design: Use case from the plastics processing industry, data-supported CO2 reduction through optimized material selection

EuProGigant and Gaia-X:

  • Connecting the use cases to Gaia-X
  • Demonstrators and EuProGigant portal
  • Experiences with the Gaia-X architecture (e.g. self descriptions, federated catalogue)
